    • You can add a strikethrough in Excel by using the Font Settings button in the Font section of the Home ribbon.
    • You can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + 5 to strikethrough Excel for Windows; on a Mac, press CMD + Shift + X.
    • To add strikethrough to part of a cell, double-click the cell and select just the text you want to strike through.

The strikethrough is a classic formatting style that resembles crossed out text, so it stands to reason that you should be able to strike through text and numbers in Excel.

And you can, though that might not be immediately obvious because there's no strikethrough tool among the formatting options in the ribbon. Don't let that slow you down; here's how to strike through any text or numbers in Excel.

You can get the exact same effect — a strikethrough — using a keyboard shortcut rather than using the Font Settings in the ribbon.

Select the cell (or range of cells) you want to strikethrough and then press Ctrl + 5 for Windows or CMD + Shift + X on the Mac.

How to add a partial strikethrough in Excel

While you generally will probably want to strike through the entirety of a cell, there might be times when you want to selectively strike through just some of the text in a cell. That's easy to do — just select the text and then follow the same steps to strike it through.

    1. Double-click a cell to enter edit mode for that cell.

    2. Select the text you want to strike through.

    3. On the Home tab of the ribbon, click the Font Setting button in and choose Strikethrough or use the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + 5 or CMD + Shift + X)

Quick tip: You can remove a strikethrough in Excel by repeating the strikethrough command on the selected cell or text. If you apply a strikethrough by accident, you can also immediately choose Undo.
