December 29, 2023; Washington, DC —The Vienna Philharmonic will perform their famous New Year's Day concert from the renowned Musikverein in Vienna on January 1, 2024.
NPR Music, exclusively in the United States, will provide the complete concert to all member stations. The concert from Vienna is presented to over 90 broadcast outlets throughout the world by the European Broadcast Union, and is easily the most listened to classical concert every year.
The concert will be conducted by Christian Thielemann, who has directed the Philharmonic frequently since 2000. This will be his second appearance, his first was in 2019.
The 2024 New Year's Day program includes many favorites by Johann Strauss Junior, including the Waldmeister Overture and the New Pizzicato Polka as well as six items appearing on the New Year's Day concert for the first time. As it has for decades now, the encores feature the most famous waltz ever, From the Blue Danube, as well as the Radetzky March.
NPR Music has provided the complete New Year's Day concert to hundreds of American radio stations since 2003.
The NPR production crew includes host Lisa Mullins of NPR Member station WBUR (her 17th New Year's Day broadcast), NPR engineer Josephine Nyounai (her first broadcast) and producer Brian Bell (his 23rd broadcast).
