Thunderhead - Son of Flicka, 20th-Fox's sequel to Flicka, is a worthy successor. A simple outdoor idyll of a ranch lad and his horse. It has the same refreshing quality of its predecessor and a similar appeal.
Thunderhead – Son of Flicka, 20th-Fox’s sequel to Flicka, is a worthy successor. A simple outdoor idyll of a ranch lad and his horse. It has the same refreshing quality of its predecessor and a similar appeal.
Story, like Flicka, is filmed on open ranges of Utah and Oregon, with its rolling country, gorges and hills.
Shots, too, of herds of horses roaming the range, always intrigue, as do brief scenes of a horse warily nosing a porcupine or violently killing a rattler. Though story [from a novel by Mary O’Hara] is a simple one of a boy rearing a colt in hopes of making him a racer, pic contains drama throughout, as in various stages of breaking in the horse or the hunt for an equine killer.
Roddy McDowall again plays the rancher’s son, as in Flicka, with shy appeal, exhibiting, however, more of the practical rancher than the kid dreamer in this film in trying to tame Thunderhead. Preston Foster plays the rancher father with warmth. Rita Johnson is again the understanding mother.
